Top 5 Best Flea Collars For Dogs (Quick Summary)
Do flea collars for dogs really work?
The effectiveness of the flea collar for dogs depends on the type of insecticides used. There are active ingredients designed to treat fleas during different stages of their life cycle. This is important to understand so that you buy products that meet your current needs.
Flea Repellent Repellents are usually made with natural active ingredients such as essential oils to repel fleas. They are not recommended for the current pests as they are not effective in killing fleas.
Kill adult fleas
Collars with strong insecticides such as Permethrin and Tetrachlorvinphos are designed to kill adult fleas. These products are usually the most direct relief for your pet but are not effective in eradicating the rest of the flea population.
When you consider that adult fleas make up only 5% of the fleas in your home, you can follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to completely solve the problem. A good IPM can include activities like vacuuming daily, washing sheets and bedding, and using a flea comb to check for fleas.
Sterilize eggs and larvae
Insect growth regulators, or IGRs, effectively sterilize eggs and young fleas. This prevents the life cycle from continuing, although it can take several weeks to work.
One factor that can reduce the effectiveness of flea collars is whether they are waterproof or not. Waterproof collars allow for monthly bathing and occasional exposure to rain without compromising their working ability. Waterproof collars are not as effective when routinely immersed in water.
Things to Consider When Buying a Flea Collar For Dogs
Choosing the right flea control solution for your dog can be intimidating, especially for those who are relatively new to dog ownership.
Choosing the right fleas and ticks collar for your street dog can help you improve your pest control efforts to protect your pet’s health.
A dog flea collar should have some important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a dog flea collar:
Natural or chemical
flea collars for dogs are either infused with chemical pesticides or natural essential oils. Natural flea collars, as a rule, are less effective than their chemical counterparts (although there are some exceptions), but they also have fewer side effects.
Different flea collars have different uses that should undoubtedly influence your choice. Some are more intended to attack the adult forms of fleas and ticks, while others are best used on younger, immature insects. Therefore, you need to decide which collar is most suitable.
Dogs do not always stay 100 percent dry. Whether your dog jumps into lakes or rivers for swimming, walks on rainy days or takes a bath, it can take its toll on her flea collar. Some flea collars are water-resistant, which means they can withstand weeks from time to time.
It may be surprising to hear, but there are literally hundreds of flea and tick species. As such, a collar that attacks the specific species you would find in your area will be more effective for your dog. Beyond that, it is best not to buy a flea collar that may be too mild or too strong. getting the right collar is the most effective solution that leads to better results.
While a collar that lasts only one month can be effective, constantly changing it can be a nuisance; not to forget, it can get expensive. Therefore, it is best to use a collar that provides long-term protection. The best flea collars for dogs are effective for at least 8 months.
10 Best Flea Collars For Dogs Of 2020
We’ve reviewed dozens of dog flea collars to find the best one. We considered a number of important factors such as active ingredients, size, shelf life, durability, customer reviews, and overall effectiveness.
Using all this information, we’ve narrowed down our options to bring you
our top ten best dog flea collars.
View On AmazonOur favorite best flea collar for dogs is the Bayer Seresto flea collar. We love this flea collar because it gives you eight months of flea protection.
This means you don’t have to worry about using flea medications or fleas for the entire eight months.
In addition, this collar does more than just kills fleas.
It also discourages them from even stepping on your dog. It also kills and repels ticks, which not many other flea collars will do.
This flea and tick neck does not smell or spread. You don’t even notice your dog wearing it.
We are a fan of the Bayer Seresto flea line of flea collars because they are the first flea collar to match topical (spot-on) treatments in their effectiveness.
As for sizing, that can be complicated when you buy a flea collar. Unfortunately, this flea collar only comes in small or large. Large is big enough for a Great Dane and small is quite small. You can easily shorten the large collar and place it on a smaller dog. If you are unsure of the size, just buy the larger collar.
- Vet-recommended prevention
- Starts to repel and kill fleas within 24 hours of the first application
- Easy to use
- Water resistant formula
Questions & Answers17
Why does it say that you are not to sleep with your pet? If they can eat it with no side effects//
That is a foreign policy, not an American policy. Like the California cancer warnings for everything. While I'm not going to say these are completely safe, after reading articles, it's important to note that the two chemicals in the collars have been around for 30 years and have been used for as long as flea / tick treatments. We have no indication that there is a danger to people if used correctly. Although I don't generally use flea products, this year, after not needing anything for more than 10 years, is a bad year. I tried Frontline and it did nothing but turn one of my cats into a lot of sores. We will be using this collar from now on until the fleas are wiped out. Just use it correctly and for the shortest possible time. Treat your home. Keep cats indoors.

We have an outdoor dog that is absolutely covered with fleas almost all year round because we don't get hard frosts here in North Carolina. We tried Frontline, Capstar, Program, Advantage, flea collars, flea shampoos, spraying fipronil in the barn area where he lives, diatomaceous earth, brewer's yeast and garlic, cedar oil and cedar bedding, and nothing worked. We even used corn oil to cover and suffocate the fleas, which worked, but only for a day or two. I was convinced that these are zombie fleas and immortal. And the poor dog was miserable and scratched I was hesitant to pay $ 50 for a flea collar that might not work but took the chance and ordered this Seresto collar. We did it on the dog two days ago and I'm amazed! The first day we noticed that the fleas on the front half of his body had disappeared. Today we haven't found a single living flea on him, nostrils to tail tip. We noticed a few deaths with him. This is the first thing we have ever found that has removed / killed the fleas! He was happily out in the sun this morning, not scratching or shaking, for the first time in months. Since the collar worked, I've also ordered one for our little indoor dog and the indoor cat, which also have fleas (but not as many as). If these collars really kill the fleas for 6-8 months, they're worth every penny. I will update my review after a few months to report whether or not the flea kill effect persisted. I will also watch for irritation, baldness, or oozing sores where the collar is (as some pets have had a negative reaction to the collar) and report it here if it happens. For now I am very happy to have something to fight the fleas! --------- Edited June 6, 2017: It's only been a few weeks, but I wanted to update. No fleas on the pets - if they pick one up in the grass, it will pop out without biting. The little dog was listless for a day or so (pretending to be tired and wouldn't play - he was still eating) after we put on his collar, but we kept a close eye on him and he was back to himself on the third day. No rawness, ulcers or extreme symptoms from the pets. I also dropped off some Hot Shot Flea Nebulizers / Bombs in our carpeted bedrooms, where we had fleas (the pets sleep with us). Between the collars and the bombs, we are finally free from fleas! I will update the collars again at the end of life to report how long they lasted. Buy this collar - you won't regret it!
View On AmazonThe first thing you notice about the HARTZ Ultraguard Plus flea and tick collar is the incredibly low price. I am always looking for a bargain so this product caught my attention from the start.
Then I was surprised by the fact that it was a treat and warded off a flea collar. As mentioned earlier, this type of flea collar is essential for my dog’s specific needs. And with further research into the product, I continued to discover features that would be perfect for my dog.
For example, it has a promise of seven months of protection, water resistance, fits neck sizes up to 22 inches, etc. All these positives, however, two elements that have popped up in the experiences of countless customers have been eliminated.
These two things were a common trend of complaints about flea collar effectiveness and lack of customer service. This is not to say that not many people expressed positive experiences with this collar: it was.
In general, this collar has many features that I consider necessary in any flea collar I buy. But the flaws in this product make this an unsuitable item to get into my dog’s life.
Nevertheless, if you’re on a budget and need a flea collar, this might be the perfect option for you. Again, there are plenty of people who swear by its effectiveness; you might become one of them.
- Excellent price
- Seven months of flea protection
- Water resistant
- Can be used on any dog for six weeks
- Fits up to neck circumference up to 22 inches
- Kills and fights fleas
- Effectiveness issues

Questions & Answers11
Can I use this on a 16 lb dog?
It does not work. I bathed both dogs (one 10 pounds, the other 45 pounds) with flea soap and then put on the collars. The collars did not help the fleas. Go with a better brand! I know these are cheaper than Advantage or Seresto or the brands you see on commercials, but they are cheaper because they DO NOT WORK!

I used the topical flea / tick remedies, but my dogs were still scratching. I put on these collars and on day 2 the scratching stopped. These were a lot cheaper than in the store, arrived on time and work fine.

The zebra is the symbol of early diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension. My 14lb Chihuahua mix looked cute and got lots of compliments when we dressed up for a fundraising and awareness walk for this purpose. The head kept falling off, but was easily replaceable for photos (and MANY attendees and the official event photographer took many, many photos). I also used a ribbon attached to the inside of the hood and tied under my dog's chin to help reduce how often the hood fell off. Of course, for safety, I didn't leave my dog unattended with the ribbon in place.
View On AmazonThis collar has a unique feature that stands out from most others on this list: it is the use of 100% natural ingredients.
This determination to use all-natural ingredients is something I love about this flea collar. It ensures that there is no chemical allergic reaction to the toxic ingredients often found in flea collars.
In addition, the five-month protection gives me a pleasant feeling of comfort regarding the overall effectiveness of the product. It may not be as long as 7 or 8 months, but it is still long enough where I don’t feel like spending money regularly to order replacements.
In addition, the idea that the manufacturer is a refund offers something else I like to see when buying a product. Even in the case of a 30-day refund, it reflects the company’s willingness to stand behind their product.
I will rather consider these natural ingredients to be as effective as the poisons found in other flea collars. After all, it would be a welcome change, since no one likes to expose their dog to these chemicals.
Honestly, I would like to buy this flea collar for my dog. But it doesn’t fit his specific needs well. And as much as I hate trusting these companies with these toxic ingredients, I can’t afford to spend this amount on repels fleas.
It’s a shame because I admire what Arava is trying to achieve. And it seems that they are well on their way to offering a high-quality, natural ingredient that can match the toxic chemicals.
- 100% natural
- Flea protection of five months
- Water resistant
- Adjustable collar
- 30-day refund
- Does nothing against pre-existing flea infestations

I live in an area that can be heavily infested with ticks during the spring. I found out the hard way one year when my dogs picked up probably a hundred ticks each in one day! I used the Seresto collars for a couple years but I always worried about the chemicals in them. Those collars may be completely safe but I try to choose products with simple ingredients that are effective. I did not have high hopes for this collar but I decided to try it since it was a very reasonable price and I could easily return it. I have been BLOWN AWAY! My dogs are outside during the day and I have not found one tick on them after 3 months and it is currently peak tick season. They are in and out of their pool constantly and I have not seen a decrease in efficacy. The collars had a strong smell for a couple days after I opened them but I do not mind the smell of essential oils. The smell was soon undetectable though. I will definitely reorder these collars 🙂
View On AmazonThe Adams flea and tick collar for dogs are not only easy to use, but its adaptability makes it the perfect option for all dogs. In addition, the fast-acting security guarantees an immediate result and offers convenience and comfort for your four-legged friend.
What could be the strongest selling point is that this efficient product provides seven months of protection to avoid additional costs when changing your dog’s flea collar every other week.
Since Adams Pet Care products have been on the market for over 30 years, it is not surprising that their products are among the best for pets.
This flea collar also has an adulticide to kill adult fleas and IGR, but the main insecticide, Tetrachlorvinphos, can cause reactions in some dogs.
You should monitor your dog for signs of discomfort, such as breathing problems, lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea when using this product. Wear gloves when applying and wash hands after use.
While the flaws of this product are not ideal, they are not deal-breakers. In other words, it’s something I can learn to live with and maneuver with. There is nothing too detrimental for me to make this product unworthy of my consideration.
And since it complements many of the necessary features I am looking for in a flea collar, I would strongly consider investing some money in buying a pair of these collars. They are easily the best bargain on this list.
So if you are looking for the highest quality at the lowest cost, this is the collar for you. But if you have a strong sense of smell or are incredibly troubled by things that break, it’s a smart idea to look elsewhere.
- Unbelievable price
- Seven months of protection against fleas

As always, the shipping and Amazon updates were great. Likewise, this is great. It is exactly as described in the product description and does what it should do. I have no complaints and would definitely recommend it to others.
View On AmazonThis collar is a relatively new one-size-fits-all collar on the market. It fits large dogs to small dogs which is great and can save you a bit of money if you want to use one collar for multiple dog sizes.
It is a fipronil based collar, so not all natural but fipronil has proven to be an effective pesticide.
The one size fits all function works by sending you a very long collar. Then cut it to the desired length for your dog’s neck size.
It’s pretty easy to get started and definitely our best choice for budget-conscious pet owners.
- One Size Fits All
- Protects for 8 months

- The tire is usually slightly weaker than competing brands (breaks occasionally)

Pro’s:• Kills everything and even what’s not on her and just in our home.• Says it’ll last 6 months, so we’ll have to see how that goes.• I really like how there’s multiple “loops” to feed the collar through. Having extra “loops” gives you the safety that it won’t easily fall off.Cons:• Left a white powdery substance on my hands and on her fur. However, it seemed to brush off of her easily and washed off my hands as well.• I’m not sure if all of these collars are “notched” together like this one was, so after clipping as close as I could to the collar I had to go back and clip a bit more in order to feed the collar through the “loops”.

View On AmazonThe BioSpot Active Care flea and tick collar is definitely a unique treatment flea collar. But it has everything you would expect from a high-quality copy.
As you’d expect by now, flea protection is suitable for dogs over six weeks old, neck sizes up to 25 inches and water-resistance are just some of the things this collar offers.
I would feel completely safe if I wrapped my dog around his neck with this collar. It’s a non-spectacular, effective option that people overlook because it doesn’t offer any special or unique features.
In other words, it doesn’t try to do anything extra and stays with the job: those fleas are so efficient and quick to kill.
All in all, BioSpot has done an excellent job of creating a flea collar that will do its job efficiently and without a tragic incident. So, if you are looking for a flea collar for treatment, this product should be at the top of your list.

Easy to put on and very difficult to shake off! I have 3 dogs doing their best to scratch, bite and swing collars of any kind, and these are the first brand they have been unsuccessful with! In fact, these flight collars do not irritate, discolor, or otherwise disturb my dogs. After the first few days, they all seemed to forget they were wearing them, and best of all, the product works as intended! My dogs spend most of their time with me in my apartment in the city, but almost every weekend we travel to my parents' farm (quite far off the beaten track) where they can stretch their legs and raise the cattle their heart can haunt its contents. These collars work like a charm to keep them all on the run and tap! I have recommended them to all my friends with pets and will continue to do so. Very satisfied!

We hunt birds in northern Wisconsin and upper peninsula Michigan. I have two wirehaired griffs. Several years ago, we had a very bad tick problem. Each day I would have to pull dozens of ticks - almost made me quit hunting as the dogs are too important to family to put them at risk. It was horrible and really upsetting. After discussions with my vet, he offered me a Scalibor collar the following year. I was completely impressed. After the first day of hunting, I was cleaning out the back of the truck from the dogs. I thought I was cleaning out sand when I realized it was dead ticks. Was very pleased and grateful to know that collars performed incredibly well.Thankfully, recent years have not had such high levels of tics, but, I get the collars every year without hesitation. It is SOP now and I count on the product to keep the dogs safe / healthy and keep my recreation relaxed and enjoyable. We don't get many opportunities to hunt these days and it is important to me and dogs to make every moment count.I have found attached ticks, but, very few and always dead. Dogs have never had issues with reaction to collars.

This product is fully effective. It has happened that both my cats got fleas during the full 4 months of use. After the 4 months, I applied a standard flea treatment on the neck to the cats, and they got fleas almost a week later. So I'm buying another set of collars - because they really work. The downside is that the collars have a very strong odor, especially within the first few weeks of use, but the odor disappears over time.
FAQs About dog flea collars
We do not know. Not much has been tested for the effects of flea collars on chemicals. The warning label says they shouldn’t be touched and pregnant women shouldn’t be there. However, chemical flea collars are certainly the most effective flea collars on the market. Flea collars with technical pesticides are poisonous. They contain chemicals such as amitraz, organophosphates or pyrethrins, all of which are used because they are poisonous and therefore can kill fleas. If you’re concerned about using toxic chemicals, you’ll find plenty of natural flea collars to choose from. They can make your dog’s coat greasy. Other than that, rather not. Some dogs can develop an allergic reaction to the specific ingredient used in a flea collar, be it chemical or botanical. These side effects are rare and individual. Now applying an insecticide to your dog can cause problems, but none of these have been discovered at the time of writing. However, you should avoid touching the flea collar. This depends on the collar you choose, so refer to the supplied instructions for information. Many start working right away, but this doesn’t mean your dog will get immediate relief from a current infestation, as it can take some time for all fleas to die and some flea collars don’t kill young fleas.
